3 Things HR Wishes They Could Say to the Company Owner (But Doesn’t Want to Get Fired)

Every HR manager has had that moment—the one where you’re sitting across from the company owner, presenting a simple, evidence-based, no-brainer policy that could boost morale, reduce turnover, and make the entire team want to kiss the ground you walk on.
And yet… the answer is “No.” Or worse: “Let’s revisit it next quarter.”
Here are three things HR would love to say in that moment—but instead we smile, nod, and quietly rage while listening to hard rock music through our earbuds:
1. “This isn’t a radical idea—it’s basic people management.”
We’re not suggesting nap pods or hiring an office goat. We’re talking flexible work hours. Or clearer PTO policies. Or… gasp… training your managers to not accidentally make people cry. It’s not revolutionary. It’s just common sense, and no, it won’t “ruin the company culture." It might actually create one.
2. “Do you like spending thousands on rehiring every few months?”
Because that’s what’s happening when your team keeps quitting due to burnout, unclear expectations, or your middle manager’s talent for motivational gaslighting. But sure, let’s not implement the policy that would keep them here and happy. That makes total sense.
3. “I didn’t get into HR to be ignored like a warning label on a hot coffee cup.”
We’re here to help the business and the people thrive—not to endlessly repeat the same recommendation until we die inside. Trust us, we’d rather be planning cool things, not sending yet another exit survey with the same avoidable answers.
In conclusion: We’re not trying to overhaul the company overnight. We’re just asking for one small, obvious change that could make a big difference. All we want is for someone to say, “You’re right, let’s do it.”
And maybe, one day, we will hear those magical words.
Until then... we’ll be over here, updating the turnover report. Again.
